What is your favorite thing about BYDS?

The people I work with make it my home away from home. 

What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the First Day of School?

I don’t really have any traditions or superstitions.  My goal for the first day of school is for each child to end their day feeling comfortable, excited, confident & curious to come back the next day.  

What is your favorite dish served in Hot Lunch?

I would have to say the salad & hummus, celery & carrot side.  

What is your favorite sport to watch? To play?

I love watching basketball & track.  As for my favorite sport to “play,” the gym (now at home) lifting & elliptical.

What grades have you taught?

I have taught Pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade.

What are you most proud of this year in regard to your work at BYDS?

I am proud of my classroom’s Lucy Calkins Writers Workshops, alongside our Social Studies family projects. 

What superhero talent would you most like to have?

I am a huge fan of the Avengers/Marvel comics series and movies.  If I could possess a superpower, it would be the ability to time travel like Dr. Strange. 

How do you spend your summer breaks?

I usually spend my summer breaks going back home to Kansas City and Mississippi to visit family. However, this summer I will be on my honeymoon, so I am super excited!

Megan Uzick, 2nd Grade Teacher

What are your hobbies/interests (other than making BYDS great)?

I love spending time with family. I have my two little boys that make everything more fun. I also like spinning, love going on walks, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. I have a new interest in cooking and baking. I specifically love trying old family recipes! 

How do you think students will remember you and your class?

I hope they remember me for instilling a love of learning. I hope they remember the feeling they got when we finished a great book, when they worked through a challenging problem, or when they published their own writing/books. 

Favorite character from children’s literature?

This is a tough question!! It depends on the day!!! I love Opal from Because of Winn Dixie. I love how much she grows and accepts her/everyone’s mistakes. I love sassy Sue Ellen from Don’t Eat the Bluebonnets. My absolute favorite would have to be Oliver from How Oliver Olson Changed the World. I think every 2nd/3rd grader should meet Oliver. He grows so much and reminds me so much of my 2nd/3rd grade students.  

What is your favorite treat?

 Anything sweet – Ice cream, cookie dough and key lime pie top the list!
